Recent rumours have been circulating the internet about a potential remake of 2013’s The Last of Us. Could the remake actually happen and if so who will develop the game?
The Last of us – Bloomberg Report
In a recent report by Jason Schreier that was published by Bloomberg on 09.04.21, there may be a The Last of Us remake in development. Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group was said to be initially working on the remake before the project was stripped from them and handed over to Naughty Dog. Naughty Dog is the original creator of the hit game and other hits such as the Uncharted series.
The Bloomberg report describes how Visual Arts Service Group were creating the remake without much support or funding from Sony. Their efforts however appeared seemingly in vain. Visual Arts Service Group were instead instructed to offer support in creating the remake and completing The Last of Us II. This led to staff dissatisfaction which led to groups founder resigning from Sony altogether.
Bloomberg’s report also criticises Sony’s senior leadership at PlayStation. The report critiques that Sony are obsessed with big blockbuster hits. Choosing these over that of smaller, niche development teams. Bloomberg states that, this is apparent in the recent ‘reorganisation’ of a development office in Japan. Sony no longer wish to invest in smaller experimental games that are only successful in Japan. Which is a shame for indie gamers.
Rumours are also circulating about whether there will be an Uncharted remake. Bloomberg’s report appears to signal that a remake may be on the table for the chartbusting game. Visual Arts Service Group again were said to have pitched the remake however the project was unlikely to fit their budget due to available man power and funding. Hopefully that another team such as Dirty Dog will pick this project up.
Right now there is no solid evidence that The Last of Us is currently in development. In terms of leaks Jason Schreier is usually accurate and his word trusted by many. Although we cannot concretely determine whether there will be a Last of Us remake, what we know so far points towards the likeliness that it may already be in the works.
After the recent resignation of several developers and the lack of funding for Visual Arts Service Group. It’s unlikely that they will be taking the lead in developing the remake of The Last of Us or Uncharted. It appears more likely that Sony will remain with Dirty Dog. With 20+ years of experience, Dirty Dog are a studio favourite.
Unfortunately this will likely disappoint some. However game enthusiasts who enjoy box office games such as Horizon, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima and Uncharted will likely be unbothered by the restructure of game development teams. Most gamers will continue to eagerly anticipate bigger budget, ambitious games to rival those available on today’s market.
